Sex Lube 101

sex lube 101

Choosing the perfect sex lube can be challenging. Today's market offers hundreds of different lubricants, each having unique components and properties. Trying to make sense out of all the clutter might make you not want to bother with it at all... What a pity.

Whether you are a man or woman, when it comes to using adult toys, you should always use a good sex lube.

It's even a good idea to use this stuff when engaging in manual masturbation or during traditional intercourse with your partner. Even though the human body produces its own natural lubrication, there is a limit as to how much your body with produce. So, unless you enjoy the sensation of roasting your genitals over an open flame, do yourself a big favor and take our advice!

Both men and women have sensitive genital tissue, and using a water, oil, or silicone based product will reduce friction and prevent chaffing and discomfort. The slick feeling of a high quality lubricant gliding over your genitals will enable you to extend your play time. The enhanced sensation will also create a far more pleasurable sexual experience, helping you please yourself or your lover from dusk til dawn.

Lubes are available in silicone, water, and oil based formulas and sometimes come in different flavors. When considering your options, consider what you will be using your product for: manual masturbation, toy fun, a combination of sex toys and your partner, bath time fun? Is it for oral sex or vaginal penetration? Is it for anal play? Once you've answered these questions, you will be better equipped to choose the appropriate product.

Oil based
An oil based product tends to be relatively thick and is perfect for men who like to jerk off. It has a more slick texture than water base and will not break down as easily. Oil based lubes tend to stain fabrics and deteriorate latex. Although these products are intended mainly for male masturbation, an oil based lubricant can be used for anal play that does not involve latex condoms, porous sex toys, or sex toys that contain latex.

Never use an oil based lube on anything that will come into contact with the vagina because it may increase the risk of vaginal infections.

Water based
You can't go wrong with a water based product because it is non-staining and can be used for every application or purpose. When in doubt- your best bet is to opt for a water based lube. (Women: Just make sure that your product does not contain sugar. This can change the sensitive pH level in your vagina, making you susceptible to yeast infections.)

Silicone based
Finally, a silicone formula is often the premium choice because it provides a superior barrier against friction and will last much longer than its water or oil based counterparts. Silicone is super slippery (without being sticky) and does not break down in water.

We do not recommend, however, using a silicone lubricant with silicone sex toys. Generally, the use of a silicone sex lube will deteriorate a silicone product over a period of time.
