How to Clean Sex Toys

cleaning sex toys

Not sure how to clean sex toys? Cleaning sex toys is as easy as 1-2-3. Here's all you need to know:

It's important to clean all sex toys before and after every use in order to preserve the integrity of the material and to shield yourself or your partner against infection. Most adult toys can be cleaned with very little effort. However, some require a little more care than others. Let's start with the easiest material first:

Glass
I love glass dildos . You can do just about anything you want with these things...
What happens if you accidentally spill a quart of 10w30 motor oil on your glass dildo? (I can't imagine that you will ever encounter that problem- but weirder things have happened!)

No worries, kiddo. Just soak it in a sink full of soapy water and dry it off with a clean towel. You could also boil your glass dildo or toss it in the dishwasher. Glass is non-porous, so it's not absolutely necessary for you to sterilize your toy. However, it can't hurt. After you've cleaned your baby off- wipe him down with rubbing alcohol and, presto, he'll be good as new!

Silicone
You can clean your silicone toy in much the same way that you clean glass. Boil it for 2-4 minutes or put it on the top rack of the dishwasher. For quick cleaning, you can wash your silicone sex toy in a solution of anti-bacterial soap and water.

Jelly and Rubber/Latex
I learned how to clean sex toys the hard way with my first jelly vibrator. I cleaned it with alcohol every day. That was a no-no. It ended up degrading the material and I had to throw it away.

Your best approach is to use a good sex toy cleaner . If you don't have any sex toy cleaner handy you can also use a mild anti-bacterial hand soap and water. However, I prefer to use the specially formulated toy cleansers because they are designed to work safely with sex toys without harming the material.

Plastic
I like to use sex toy cleaner. Sometimes I use mild soap and water, and then I sanitize my toy with a little rubbing alcohol.

Cyberskin
Caring for Cyberskin (and other porous, realistic skin-like materials such as UR3, Futurotic, and UltraSkin) is a little more involved. However, learning how to clean sex toys made from these materials isn't rocket science.

Use sex toy cleaner or a mild anti-bacterial soap and lukewarm water. Pat the toy dry with a soft cotton towel and allow it to air dry completely.

Next, if your product comes with a renewing powder, apply it generously to the toy. If you don't have "renewing powder", cornstarch works just as well. This will help to maintain or restore the material's original soft, non-sticky, smooth texture.

Note: Often times sex toy manufacturers will not disclose the material that their product is made from. However, if the product is advertised as being made from a "virtual skin" material or is described as replicating the feel and appearance of human skin- it is probably made from one of the above-mentioned materials and should be cared for accordingly.

A Word to the Wise

Take extra care to learn how to clean sex toys properly if you are going to switch back and forth between vaginal and anal use. You must avoid transmitting bacteria from the anus into the vagina. It's also a good idea to cover porous toys with a condom prior to insertion. Changing the condom as often as is necessary will not only shield you or your partner against infection- it will protect the material and prolong the life of your toy.
